Our 3-year-old daughter and I recorded our own father-daughter duet of ‘True Colors’ from the movie Trolls.
We always found ourselves singing it around the house, so one day I decided we should record it. It’s something we’ll always have; a moment frozen in time. I can’t wait to show her these music videos we’ve created when she gets older. I should probably record her face when we do watch them just to capture that moment as well. Now, I’m definitely in no rush for my daughter to grow up. That’s for sure. But, it’s certainly something I’m looking forward to. Not many little girls can say they recorded a father-daughter duet of ‘True Colors’ or any other song, for that matter.
I was never a huge fan of this song until I heard it in the movie ‘Trolls’. Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick’s version is very soulful and heartfelt. It creates more meaning than the original simply by the way it is performed in a slower, acoustic form. Needless to say, my daughter and I love it! Reagan and I have watched ‘Trolls’ a thousand times and sing the song together in the truck. It was a no-brainer to record it in my home studio.
Recording a three-year-old in a studio was definitely the most difficult part of the entire process. As boisterous as Reagan is when she sings it around the house, she got a little shy when we put the headphones on and placed the microphone in front of her. It took a little coaxing and a few takes, but we eventually got the tracks laid down and put it all together. My wife, also named Anna, filmed us while we sang our vocals so I have to give her a shout out. Once the song was complete, I edited the video together and we were finished. A memory in the time capsule of video.
